Gary Job Corps is now under new management. The largest of the nation’s 125 job corps centers, the Gary campus came under the management of Adams and Associates, which is based in Reno, Nevada, on April 1.
It is the second change in management to occur in the past year.
Currently, there are 1,471 students at Gary from across the state pursuing vocational training in 18 areas including construction, healthcare, security, financial services and distribution operations. It offers high school diploma programs as well as programs for high school equivalency and, through a partnership with Austin Community College, college certification.
“Adams is eager to provide Gary Job Corps Center students with the education and training they need to succeed in the 21st Century workforce,” new Executive Center Director Lorraine Lane said. Lane, formerly a regional executive director with Adams, has worked within the job corps program for 27 years and served as center director for five Adams-managed centers. She will work closely with Adams President Susan Larson in managing the 880-acre Gary campus.
Job Corps is a free, federal program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. In addition to training, students receive housing, support services and job placement assistance. Until May of last year, the center was managed by Management Training Corporation. ResCare Inc. took over then, with its contract expiring March 31.
Gary recruits students between 16 and 24 years old, from San Marcos, San Antonio, Houston, Austin and across Central Texas. Applicants must meet certain income requirements.
Adams is a 100 percent employee-owned company that began as a small business formed in 1990 with the sole mission of operating at-risk youth and children’s programs for local, state and federal governmental agencies. Today, Adams is one of the largest private sector entities involved in the job corps program.
The company employs more than 2,700 staff members at 18 locations, including 16 job corps sites across the country, providing academic, vocational training and placement services to approximately 9,000 young people. In addition to Reno, the company has offices in Columbia, Maryland and Worcester, Massachusetts to provide corporate support and expertise to its job corps campuses.
In addition to training and education, Gary students interact with the larger San Marcos community by providing services to organizations including the Salvation Army, San Marcos Nursing & Rehabilitation and the United Way.
