Have you listened to your true community radio station lately? Our volunteer staff is comprised of your friends, neighbors, and co-workers most of whom have no previous radio experience. When one considers that, most folks are amazed at the quality of the programs that they are listening to. From politicians to teachers, to chefs, custodial staff members and veterans, almost anyone can come and share the things they are most passionate about.
Deciding to host a radio program, however, is much like taking on a second job. There are many responsibilities and obligations involved. There are also many rewarding experiences to be had as well. Occasionally, our radio hosts will state that hosting their own program has helped them to develop social skills they didn’t realize they had. It is true that many will develop a “radio personality,” but, that’s rarely a bad thing. At times, life events or other obligations will require that a DJ may have to leave the staff but many report that they do not lose the “itch” or desire to get back into the broadcast booth. As much as possible, we are happy to accommodate and facilitate their return.
For anyone who is interested or curious about learning more about what we do, it is recommended that you speak with any of our radio hosts by either attending any of our volunteer staff meetings or any of the events that we host. Our volunteer staff meetings are held every fourth Wednesday at Wake the Dead Coffee House. The next one will be held on April 24 and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Bring your ideas and suggestions on how we may serve our community better.
There are a lot of things going on in the month of April. Come and sip some wine and nibble on tapas with us at the Perch or Flounder Bed and Breakfast on the 4th. Sit by the river, watch the sun set, and listen to the music of Johnny Dioxide. Advance tickets are available on line at KZSM.org. Downtown Swing gets kicked off in the Kissing Alley on the 11th with Big Cedar Fever. Bring your dance shoes or just sit and enjoy some Western Swing. Our regularly scheduled Kissing Alley concert will feature the jazz stylings of Shannon Murphy and the music of Peach Almanac. As always, our concerts are free, open to the public, and family friendly!
KZSM (Just a little bit south of weird!) now streaming world-wide on the internet at KZSM.org.
