Poll: Leave driving tests in the hands of DPS

The Record’s online poll March 8 - 22 asked readers whether they think returning to the parental testing option for teens attaining a license would be beneficial.

A bill filed by State Representative James White, a Republican who represents District 19, would allow Texas parents to administer a driving test for their teens to get their license instead of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

White has filed HB 409, which would overturn a change to the Texas Transportation Code made in 2009, that required individuals younger than 18 to take a test administered by the Texas Department of Public Safety – something state lawmakers, who voted for the change in 2009, argued would make roads safer. HB 409 would allow parents to administer the test, in an effort to alleviate wait times at DPS driver license offices.

The poll asking, “Do you think returning to the parental testing option would be beneficial?” received a total of 135 votes, with the majority of votes — 87 percent or 117 votes — going to option “No, it could make roads less safe.” Thirteen percent of voters, or 18 votes, chose, “Yes, It could alleviate wait times.”

A large majority of poll voters think returning to the parental testing option would not be beneficial because it could make Texas roads less safe. Every week, the Record gives its readers the opportunity to voice their opinions on different topics. This poll does not, and does not purport to, accurately depict public opinion. It is only intended to inspire thought-provoking discussion within the community.

SMDR’s new poll is available online now, and asks for reader’s opinions on whether they think state legislation that would expand sexual harassment protections to businesses of all sizes would be beneficial. It can be voted on now.
