County set to consider grants for vets at schools, remote weather stations

The Hays County Commissioners Court will hear a presentation regarding Volunteer Veterans at School and consider acceptance of a grant from the state for weather station maintenance at its meeting this morning.

The commissioners are set to hear a presentation on the specifics of a grant application sent to the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, for the Hays County Volunteer Veterans at School Program. The grant application was approved at the commissioners court’s previous meeting and could garner the county up to $75,000 for the program.

The commissioners are also slated to approve a $5,000 grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Texas LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee) Program for maintenance on the county’s remote automated weather stations. The grant has no cash matching requirement.

In other business, the commissioners are set to approve several equipment purchases as part of their consent agenda. The commissioners will consider authorizing the Precinct 1 Constable’s Office to purchase two Colt M4 semi-automatic guns for the constable and chief deputy. The cost is listed as $1,914. Commissioners will also consider authorizing an expense of $4,142 for a new hot water heater for the Hays County Health Department on Broadway Street. The agenda states that the current hot water heater has “undergone many repairs and the bottom has rusted out.” The commissioners are also expected to consider authorizing the purchase of a new speaker’s podium for use at the Hays County Courthouse during special events. The cost of the new podium, which will be equipped with a 50-watt sound system, is listed as $758.99.

Also at today’s meeting, the commissioners could hear an update on the Electro Purification contested case hearing. Precinct 3 Commissioner Lon Shell had said last week that a mediation session was scheduled for March 4 (yesterday).

Kinder Morgan, the company building a natural gas pipeline currently proposed to run through Hays County, will not be making a presentation at this morning’s meeting despite an invitation from County Judge Ruben Becerra to attend today’s meeting. Shell had noted last week that representatives from the company have expressed willingness to come to commissioners court and discuss the pipeline project.

The Hays County Commissioners Court will meet at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the Hays County Courthouse, 111 San Antonio St. Meetings are also streamed live.
