Betty Ruth Werley passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the age of 91. Betty was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was an animal lover and an avid football fan!

She was born to Thomas and Ruth Davis Plumbley on April 23, 1929 in El Paso, Texas. Betty earned her Bachelor’s degree at Texas Christian University and soon after graduation moved to Vernon, Texas to pursue youth ministry. While in Vernon she met her husband, William Werley. Together they had three children: Elizabeth, Will, and Rob. After 12 years in Scottsdale, Arizona they moved back to Wimberley, Texas and she finished her career working 20 years for the San Marcos Telephone Company.

Betty was an avid reader all her life and because of that she volunteered at the San Marcos and Wimberley Public Libraries in the adult literacy programs. She specialized in adults where English was a second language. She volunteered at Southwest Texas State University recording books for the blind. She also volunteered at the libraries for Travis Elementary, Hernandez and Goodnight Middle Schools and read to children at several daycares in the area. She was a big believer that reading could take you anywhere and everywhere you wanted to go.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Werley, her brothers Tom Plumbley, Harry Lee Plumbley, Dick Plumbley, William Plumbley, and sisters Jeanie Cecilia and Joann Skates.

She is survived by her sons, William Werley of Glendale Heights, Illinois, Rob Werley of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, her daughter Elizabeth Ferguson and husband John Ferguson Jr. of San Marcos, Texas, brothers David Plumbley and wife Helen of Independence, Missouri, Robin Plumbley and wife Jan of Portland, Oregon as well as ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Hope Hospice for all the love and care they gave Betty during her last few months, especially her Hospice nurse Julie.

Donations to honor Betty may be made by mail to the San Marcos Public Library, 626 E Hopkins Street, San Marcos, TX 78666 with a note that it is in memory of Betty Werley.

Due to the severity of COVID-19, there will be no service at this time. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Arrangements in care of Pennington Funeral Home, 323 N Commanche, San Marcos, TX 78666 512-353-4311 ~ www.penningtonfuneralhome.com
