Richard A. Cowan, born May 16, 1937 to Virgil and Mabel Collier Cowan, passed away peacefully December 29, 2020.

Richard A. Cowan, born May 16, 1937 to Virgil and Mabel Collier Cowan, passed away peacefully December 29, 2020.

Richard married the love of his life, Barbara Teeler, in 1959, and together they had three children and built a home on the Cowan family property.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles Cowan, and granddaughter Dusty Young.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; sons, David and his wife Beth, and Kenneth and his wife Karen; daughter, Sandra Cowan Ellison and husband Tim; grandson, Tyler Ellison; granddaughters, Bekah Kemp, Ashley Cowan, Kendale Cowan, Karley Cowan, and Aubrey Ellison; great-grandson, Trynt Kemp. He is also survived by his sister Jan

Teeler, brother David Cowan, and many nieces and nephews.

Richard worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in his senior year at San Marcos

High School. Following school, he began as a Carpenter for J D Evans then went on to work with Mr. Scott in the appliance repair business. Richard and Barbara married and started their family. As a young father he became a member of Fire Station #1. Later, Richard started work for the San Marcos Telephone Company, retiring after many years. Some may recall his nickname “Doc” from when he worked in the community on business phone systems. He is remembered for his knowledge and confidence in his work on PBX systems. He was always kind and helpful with a good sense of humor and a quick wit.

Visitation will be on Monday, January 4th from 11 am to 12:30 pm at Pennington Memorial Chapel; with graveside service at 1 pm at San Marcos City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local charity of your choice.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Abide of Austin Heart San Marcos and the nurses and aide staff of Christus Santa Rosa – San Marcos.
