SMPD arrests 22-year-old after leading police on chase

A 22-year-old was arrested after driving recklessly and leading San Marcos police on chase in and out of several apartment complexes early Monday morning.

A San Marcos Police Department officer observed a 2014 Jeep Trailhawk SUV driving recklessly at around 100 mph on the east access road of Interstate 35 near State Highway 123 at approximately 2:21 a.m., officials said, adding that an attempt to stop the vehicle was made. Police added that the driver — later identified as Jacob Anthony Fuentes, 22, of San Marcos — proceeded to evade the officer, failed to yield then traveled northbound onto Linda Drive and through several apartment complexes.

SMPD said Fuentes exited the vehicle while it was still moving and fled on foot for a short distance at the Townwood Apartments, 520 Linda Drive.

Police stated that the Jeep Trailhawk, which was stolen, struck a parked vehicle at a low speed causing minor damage to both vehicles.

SMPD said it proceeded to apprehend Fuentes following a brief foot pursuit. Officials added that he was in possession of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest.

Police said the stolen vehicle was occupied by two passengers who were detained and later released. The Jeep Trailhawk is believed to have been stolen from San Antonio, SMPD added.

Officials said that although it was reported that a handgun was or had been in the vehicle, police only located a loaded handgun magazine. Officers searched the route and area of the pursuit trying to locate a handgun that may have been thrown out but the search didn’t produce a gun, SMPD said.

Fuentes was transported to the Hays County Jail, where he was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest on food and possession of a controlled substance.

As of press time Tuesday, Fuentes remained in the county jail on $20,000 surety bonds for the four charges.

Officials said there were no injuries to officers, or subjects, and no damage to SMPD vehicles.
