Van Patten named new Chief Building Official

Steve Van Patten has been hired as the new Chief Building Official for the city of San Marcos and the public is invited to get acquinted with him on Tuesday, June 11, at a come-and-go reception. The reception will be held in the Permit Center, 630 E. Hopkins, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Van Patten, formerly with the City of Corpus Christi, joined the inspections team as Chief Building Official following the retirement of Tommy Mills. He brings over 35 years of experience in construction, real estate and building inspections in Texas, California and Nevada and holds the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners Inspectors License, numerous International Code Council Certifications and is a Certified Floodplain Manager.

Im excited to be back in the Hill Country and look forward to completing my career in the beautiful city of San Marcos, Van Patten said. I hope my experience will benefit not only the city, but also the community as a whole.

Van Patten is a member of the Building Association of Texas (BOAT) as well as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He leads a team of three certified inspection staff responsible for all residential and commercial building plan review and inspection of private construction projects.

San Marcos issued 3,993 permits with $106,532,603 in construction value during 2012 and is on track to surpass those numbers for 2013. Current permitted commercial and multi-family projects under construction total more than $83 million in construction value with 95 new, single-family homes being permitted during the first five months of the year.

The city utilizes the MyPermitNow web-based permitting system ( which allows applicants to apply and pay for permits online, upload plans electronically and check the status of their permit from their computer 24 hours a day.
