AUSTIN — Former Texas State defensive coordinator Craig Naivar was hired to Tom Herman's coaching staff at Texas Monday afternoon.

Texas officially announced the hire of Naivar along with Houston defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. Orlando will be the team's defensive coordinator while Naivar’s position will be announced along with the rest of his assistants once Herman’s staff is complete. The hiring of Orlando came after Houston elected to promote offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to head coach.

The con obviously being that Texas State was losing its most reliable scorer and inside presence over the past two seasons. However, head coach Danny Kaspar’s motion offense would theoretically be freed up for its perimeter players not having to revolve around Gant and not force half-court sets to be so predictable to opposing teams.

Head coach Everett Withers landed his 24th verbal commitment for his second recruiting class in Cedar Hill safety Josh Newman.

A 6-foot-1-inch safety, Newman recorded 50 solo tackles this season including two passing breakups and helped Cedar Hill reach an 11-3 record. The Longhorns held opponents to under 21 points six times in 2016 before their season ended against DeSoto High School in the Regional I finals, 55-41.
