Kasper Nyland opened the spring season with a 2nd place finish shooting 10-under par at the Hal Williams Collegiate, his top finish of his collegiate-career. Texas State finished ninth among 15 teams at the Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course on Tuesday.

“A lot of positives in our first tournament of the spring,” said men’s golf head coach Shane Howell. “Kasper Nyland was spectacular in his play coming in second place in a very strong field. As a team we have a very long way to go to reach our potential, but this was a nice first step.”

After recording two rounds under par at the Hal Williams Collegiate, Nyland shot a 71 to finish even in the final round.

The junior closed out the tournament 10-under 203 and tied for second alongside No. 14 Tommy Kuhl representing Illinois and five strokes behind Mateo Fernandez De Oliveira of Arkansas.

In the tournament, Nyland was the only Bobcat to finish under par while setting a new single round low and a 54-hole career-low.

Jack Burke had the highest jump on the leaderboard for the Bobcats, moving up 19 spots in the third round after finishing two-under 69 with the help of three birdies. Terrin Anderson advanced four spots after going even in today’s round.

Texas State finished ninth shooting their lowest round of the tournament one-under 283 in the closing round. The field consisted of 15 teams, three ranked in the top-50, No. 5 Illinois claimed the top spot 36-under 816.

Texas State men’s golf will resume play next month at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate March 1-3 in Palm Desert, Calif. at the Classic Club.
