Led by singles players Jaden Taber and Ben Johnson, the San Marcos High School junior-varsity boys tennis team recently won its seventh consecutive district title
“I was so proud of these boys,” SMHS head tennis coach Jack Hughes said. “I told them before the district tournament that I wanted to my retirement gift from them to be keeping this winning streak alive.”
Taber and Johnson off in the boys’ singles championship, with Taber winning the match, 8-3, to take home the gold.
Will Mayhew reached the quarterfinals after defeating an opponent from Smithson Valley, before losing to a player from New Braunfels, 9-7.
Jonathan Espinosa also advanced to the quarterfinals, while Dane Heyen made it to the consolation final
Jack Bynum and Lane Wright reached the finals in boys’ doubles before falling to a state-ranked pair from New Braunfels, 8-6. Brenden Flores and Derrick Wigler finished fourth in boys’ doubles, while Cody Thrasher and Tyler Ellison teamed up to take the boys’ doubles consolation title.
Chris Velasquez and Evelyn Vasquez teamed up to beat a pair from Converse-Judson to win the mixed-doubles title, as Ryan Rodriguez and Loren Gamez combined to win third in mixed doubles.
