Through 85 miles of the 2013 Texas Water Safari, Jon Newcomb and Andy Toppin probably felt good about their chances to complete the race. Newcomb and Toppin, who both paddled under the ‘Wounded Warrior’ team name, reached the Gonzales 183 checkpoint in 31 hours and 29 minutes.
That’s when Toppin, an amputee with a prosthetic leg, couldn’t go any further. If Boat No. 1938 was to reach Seadrift, it would be Newcomb’s sole duty to get it there.
So Newcomb rearranged supplies in the aluminum canoe and paddled forward.
