SAN ANTONIO — The term “emotional roller coaster” doesn’t even begin to describe the thrilling 13-12, nine-inning victory over the San Antonio-O’Connor Lady Panthers that kept the San Marcos Lady Rattler’s season alive.
The San Marcos jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first inning, but O’Connor battled back and took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning.
After the Lady Rattlers tied it up in the eighth to force another extra inning, the Lady Panthers scored two runs to leave SHMS hopes — and their season — hanging in the balance.
A walk by senior Danielle Ricks, followed by a double by junior Stephanie Marmolejo left the tying runner on second base. Sophomore Ellie Hernandez ripped a double to right field that scored both runners to make the score 12-12. That brought senior Rene Contreras to the plate.
“I just stayed confident up there,” Conteras said. “I stayed positive the whole time.”
Conteras proceeded to knock a slap-hit single past the O’Connor pitcher to score Hernadez for the winning run.
The series is now tied 1-1 with the deciding game to be played Saturday at noon at North East Softball Complex in San Antonio.
