The deadline to file federal income tax returns is fast approaching. The American Association of Retired Persons and the San Marcos Public Library are co-sponsoring a free income tax assistance program at the library.
The last day for free tax assistance is on Monday, April 15. AARP volunteers are at the library every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. This service provides assistance to the low-income, handicapped, and elderly with filling out their income tax returns.
Taxpayers who utilize this free, walk-in service should bring a copy of last year's income tax return, a social security card for themselves and all dependents, a photo ID, and any other tax-related information. E-filing is also offered and those who wish to have their refund direct deposited into their account will need to bring a check or a letter from their bank including the bank routing number and account number.
The library also has a wide array of free tax forms for taxpayers to pick up. Forms and publications can also be printed from the IRS website at irs.gov/Forms-&-Pubs.
For further information, call the library at 393-8200 or drop by the library at 625 E. Hopkins St. and inquire at the information desk.
