Press Conference, Art Exhibit, and Forum to Focus on Texas Senate Bill 4

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Wednesday, February 28, 2024

On Friday, March 1, events sponsored by Mano Amiga San Marcos and Border Network for Human Rights focusing on Texas Senate Bill 4 (SB4) will take place at the Price Center, 222 W. San Antonio Street. There will be a Press Conference at 1:00 p.m., a Community Art Project from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and a Forum at 6:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

SB4 is scheduled to take effect in Texas on March 5. Among other things, it enables Texas law enforcement officers to arrest anyone in Texas if they presume they have entered the state of Texas anywhere other than a port of entry.

Mano Amiga and Border Network for Human Rights have a history of working effectively with individuals and families seeking to cross the Texas/ Mexico border and with immigrants living in our community. One in four Texans are immigrants and the ratio is likely higher in San Marcos.

Everyone who is opposed to SB4 is invited to attend the Press Conference at 1:00 p.m. to express their opposition to this bill which seeks to further criminalize, terrorize, and create hate toward our immigrant family members, friends, and neighbors. Take a stand, express your views.

At the Community Art Project from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. local artists’ works will be available. This art is a powerful expression of the immigrants’ experiences, hopes and fears about current conditions in our community.
