COLLEGE STATION, Texas— Researchers from The Texas A&M University System shared several proposals to improve emergency management at a research symposium hosted by the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) on Tuesday.
In time for Valentine's

First Step School made Valentine cards for Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413 Auxiliary to deliver to the veterans at Brookdale Senior Living. Tina Thomas-Owens, owner of the First Step School on Posey Rd., contacted Bernie Adams of the VFW post to coordinate the Valentine’s for Veterans project. Adams and volunteer Dorothy Cook picked up the cards on Monday, Feb. 13 and delivered them along with candy and puzzles to the veterans at Brookdale Senior Living. Due to COVID-19 and flu season, the volunteers were not allowed to mingle with the veteran residents. However, they left the cards in the care of Brookdale employees Laura Ramirez, Wendy Hajduk, Karla Flores and Betty Silguero, who later delivered the gifts to the veterans and their spouses.
The Snowbird Concert series is an annual all ages free concert series hosted by Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos and OYOU.

An 11-year-old Goodnight Middle School student died after being hit by a vehicle early Friday in the drop off lane of the parking lot at the start of the school day, according to San Marcos Police.
Republican leaders in the Texas Senate are intent on raising the penalty for voting illegally from a misdemeanor to a second-degree felony, despite the lack of evidence of widespread voter fraud in Texas. The effort comes nearly two years after the Legislature passed a sweeping voting bill, Senate Bill 1, that lowered the penalties for such crimes to a misdemeanor — and then almost immediately began discussing raising them back.
The temperatures in the 80s bring families and students out to the San Marcos River by the dozens including at Swell Park. Winter may not be over completely but spring is making a good show at coming early.

WHERE'S WINTER?
Two of Texas’ congressional representatives are calling on President Biden to take action on requests from the state for funding to address the repercussions of the ice storm that hit the state earlier this month.
State Highway 123, also called Guadalupe Street, will once again be closed at the intersection of Interstate 35 through the weekend, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. This will allow crews to pour the new I-35 bridge deck.
The San Marcos City Council recently approved a speed limit change and also discussed pricing and fees associated with the San Marcos City Cemetery and the new columbarium and ossuary.

DEAR ABBY: I am a first-generation Mexican American who married into a Caucasian blended family. My husband, my stepdaughter, “Lisa,” and her mother and stepfather make up a beautiful unit. I have no children. Although my family initially ruffled at my interracial marriage, they got with the program – so much so that we invited Lisa to partake in a coming-of-age rite, the quinceanera. We were excited to update and modify it as much as possible so all sets of parents, grandparents and other family could be involved.
