Police warn of spam phone calls

Friday, July 28, 2023

In recent weeks, a bevy of scammers are making calls that try to scam money from residents. Both police and sheriff’s office officials said they are aware that some residents have received scam calls from “spoofed” phone numbers that look like they come from SMPD.

The callers claim to be from either the San Marcos Police Department or the Hays County Sheriff's Office. In these calls, the attempt to gain funds is a ruse warning residents that they have an arrest warrant.

To prevent arrest, the scammers demanded that residents send payments using a gift card or by making a deposit at a bitcoin kiosk. As a reminder, the SMPD stated it will never ask for payment over the phone and it will never request fines to be paid with gift cards. If you receive a fraudulent phone call, please report it to the police by calling the non-emergency line at 512-753-2108.
