Slightly more respondents oppose new A-F accountability ratings for schools

Online Poll
Tuesday, September 4, 2018

The Record’s online poll from Aug. 17-31 asked readers whether they think the Texas Education Agency’s new A-F accountability system is beneficial.

The Texas Education Agency released their academic accountability ratings on Aug. 15.

The system evaluates the state’s 1,200 public and charter districts on things like student achievement, school progress and closing achievement gaps affecting low-income students. In all, 153 districts got an A and 16 received Fs – SMCISD earned a C overall, with a score of 72 out of 100.

The A-F accountability system has been criticized by teacher groups and education advocates who worry that too many districts in poor areas will flunk, stigmatizing their students. But many top Texas conservatives counter that the system encourages academic rigor and is an easy way for parents to understand where districts stand.

The poll asking, “Do you think the A-F accountability system is beneficial?” received a total of 86 votes, with the majority of votes – 53 percent or 46 votes – going to option “No, it could disproportionately disadvantage poor districts and their students.” Forty-seven percent, or 40 votes, chose, “Yes, it helps parents evaluate school districts and encourages academic rigor.”

A slight majority of poll voters think that the Texas Education Agency’s new A-F accountability system could disproportionately disadvantage poor districts and their students. Every week, the Record gives its readers the opportunity to voice their opinions on different topics. This poll does not, and does not purport to, accurately depict public opinion. It is only intended to inspire thought-provoking discussion within the community.

SMDR’s new poll is available online now, and asks for readers’ opinions on whether they think the San Marcos City Council should close Loquat Street as part of a Sessom Creek stream restoration project. It can be voted on now at www.sanmarcosrecord.com.
