Pleas for help fill the shelves at Hays County food bank

Crisis Averted
Thursday, July 5, 2018

The Hays County Food Bank put out a call for help, and the community responded.

“We’ve been very blessed. It’s been amazing to see how the community has stepped up,” said Mallory Best, communications director for the food bank.

Shelves were almost empty at the bank, which distributes about 65,000 pounds of food each month to individuals, families and agencies. Then several local businesses, including Diaz Martial Arts and San Marcos Taxi, started food drives while local residents started fundraisers on Facebook to benefit the food bank. Best said the bank received 2,000 pounds of food that supporters purchased from Amazon, and another truck from Amazon had just arrived.

In a food storage area sits two pallets of food from the Hays County Food Bank’s Amazon wishlist that were brought to the bank on Monday morning.

Though the food bank got a reprieve from having bare shelves, Best said donations are always welcome.

“There is always a need,” she said.

The biggest needs as far as food supplies are shelf-stable milk, boxed dinners like tuna casserole and mac and cheese that are easy to prepare, canned soups, tomato products, rice, beans, canned tuna and other proteins, and canned fruits and vegetables.

The food bank also accepts donations of funds and items other than food that are needed to keep operations running. For more information on how to donate, visit the Hays County Food Bank's website
