LWV to hold debate for City Council candidates

The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Hays County will hold a Candidates Debate for the San Marcos City Council Election on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 East Hopkins Street. Arrive by 6 p.m. to interact with the candidates before the debate begins.

Debate participants attending include:

  • Mayor - John Thomaides and Jane Hughson
  • Council, Place 4 - Shane Scott, Griffin Spell, and Mark Rockeymoore
  • Council, Place 5 - Rick Henderson, Mark C. Gleason, and Jocabed “Joca” Marquez
  • Council, Place 6 - Melissa Derrick and Juan Miguel Arredondo.

All invited candidates have indicated that they plan to attend. After opening statements, the candidates will be asked questions by League moderator Brenda Smith. The audience will also be invited to ask questions followed by closing statements.

The LWV does not support or oppose any political party or any candidate. It does promote informed participation of all citizens in their government by providing factual information to help themcast an informed vote.

The website www.vote411.org is a tool of the local League and state League of Women Voters to assist in informing voters by allowing a sample ballot to be custom-created.

The website has candidate questions posed by the LWV of Hays County, the Austin Area and other chapters and the State LWV.

In person early voting runs Oct. 22. until Nov, 2. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
