Washington Garcia is an associate professor of piano and assistant director for the school of music at Texas State, and something of a child-prodigy.
Garcia started playing piano at the age of four. Growing up in Ecuador, Garcia started in a program for gifted children, and even after starting at the young age of four, he skipped several grades. By the time he was 18, Garcia had his bachelor’s of music in piano performance.
At age 11, Garcia says he won a national piano competition in Ecuador, receiving a $100 check; his first paycheck as a musician, he says.
As a child, Garcia worked all day, practicing, attending school and other lessons.
“I’d leave at five in the morning from home and I’d come back like at eight or nine at night to do homework. I was doing four or five things at the same time,” he said. “It was a very hectic life as a child. I didn’t have an average teenage life. I was really working. I was working and producing.”
