Muralist Robert R. Jones shows new exhibit ‘Walking in My Shoes’

Many San Marcos locals are familiar with the large diversity mural that was unveiled on Jan. 16, 2021, off the corner of LBJ Dr. and Martin Luther King Dr. near downtown San Marcos. The artist of the mural, Robert R. Jones, is set to unveil a new exhibit of original works at the San Marcos Art Center starting April 6-30. While the diversity mural, titled “Celebrate Diversity: Our Common Thread,” was the largest piece Jones has created, totaling at 16 panels and 500 hours of work, Jones’ new exhibit, “Walking in My Shoes” will show a series of paintings and prints reflecting on the experiences of the artist’s life.

“Many ideas and themes come from my observations of daily life and spirit-filled activities in and around my community,” Jones said. “Things I experience, see and feel passionate about. Being from a small town always causes a reflection on some of the memories when going back for a visit. Growing up was a simple pleasure and continues to lend nostalgic memories to many of my paintings. ‘Walking In My Shoes’ is a combination of personal and entertaining interactions. But, before you come to any conclusions about me and/or others, try walking in their shoes or my shoes. Bright and colorful images bring a joyous feeling of visual contentment, even where there is pain or sorrow that might be found deep within. Perspective is one of my favorite words — to see things from a different angle which is refreshing and expands one’s viewpoint. This viewpoint comes to a point for capturing, love, entertainment and empathy.”

Jones references a poem titled “Judge Softly,” by Mary T. Lathrap that runs parallel to the paintings he has created for this exhibit:

“...Just for a moment, slip into their minds and traditions

And see the world through his or her spirit and eyes Before you cast a stone or falsely judge his or her conditions.

Remember to walk a mile in their shoes And remember the lessons of humanity taught to you...

We will be known forever by the tracks we leave In other people’s lives, our kindnesses and generosity.

Take the time to walk a mile in their shoes.”

“Walking in my Shoes” will open at the San Marcos Art Center on April 6 and will run through April 30. The San Marcos Art League invites visitors to attend the opening reception on April 8 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Art Center, located at 117 N Guadalupe St. Suite 101 in downtown San Marcos.
