Kristan Alvarez and her mother, Della Lucio of KnD’s Boutique awarded two scholarships totaling $1,000 to San Marcos High School seniors Isaiah Deleon and Sofia White. Both Rattler alumni, Alvarez — class of 2008 — and Lucio, class of 1982, presented the scholarships to White and Deleon at halftime during the San Marcos Rattlers football game on Friday, Sept. 23.

“Thank you, San Marcos,” Alvarez said in a video shared before the presentation. “Because of your continued support, we’re able to give back to our community.”

Sofia White is a four-year Diamond Line member who served as Junior Lieutenant last year and currently serves as captain of the Diamond Line Dance Team. White is also a four-year varsity choir member, a member of the National Honor Society and will graduate this spring in the top 3% of her class.

Michelle Knight, director of the Diamond Line, said, “Sofia is a natural leader and the kind of person everyone wants to be around. She is smart, funny, and talented and is certain to set the world on fire! She inspires me every day to be better. There is nothing Sofia White can’t do.”

Deleon is the Quarterback of the SMHS Football team, having been selected to compete at the Elite 11 Quarterback competition for two years, finishing fifth during the 2022 summer competition. In 2020 and 2021, Deleon was selected for All District in Football and Academic All District in both Football and Basketball. He is also a three-year veteran on the Varsity Basketball team.

SMHS Athletic Director John Walsh said, “Isaiah DeLeon is a leader in our football program and a great player, but he is a better human being. I am a better coach having the opportunity to coach Isaiah.”

KnD’s celebrated its 10-year anniversary in April, and won the title of Best Women’s Boutique in the 2021 Best of Hays business awards. Giving back to the San Marcos has always been important to Alvarez and Lucio, and this scholarship is a realization of a long-term goal. However, according to Alvarez, it’s only the beginning. “Hopefully we’ll be able to double it next year,” Alvarez said.
