Garden club meets Thursday
The January meeting of the Spring Lake Garden Club will be on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 9:30 a.m. at McCoy’s Headquarters located at 1350 Interstate 35 North on the east access road.
The focus of the meeting is the importance and care of pollinators including bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Marlene Gillham from Killeen will speak on “Pollinators and the Pollinator Garden.”
Gillham is a member of the Killeen and Georgetown garden clubs, a Bell County Master Gardener, and a past director of District V of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. Currently Gillham and her husband are turning a huge raised bed vegetable garden into a pollinator garden with a rose hedge. Gillham enjoys people and giving programs in an interactive setting where she learns as much as she gives.
Media attention lately has made citizens more aware of the importance of pollinators which have been decreasing in numbers. Without pollinators our ecosystem and thus our civilization is in danger of perishing. Besides being vital for scientific reasons, pollinators bring beauty to our surroundings and even entertainment, especially to avid photographers.
Women and men of the area are encouraged to attend the January meeting and consider becoming members. Membership is open to anyone interested in gardening, especially learning about plants for the Texas weather and local conditions.
Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month from September through May. For more information check springlakegardenclub.wordpress.com.
