Juneteenth schedule of festivities released
June 19 is Juneteenth — a day, week or even a month in some places that is marked with celebrations and family gatherings.
It is commemorated as being the day that Texas slaves, first in Galveston, learned of the Emancipation Proclamation.
In San Marcos, the Juneteenth celebration begins on June 19 with Rose Brooks’ annual bake sale at the San Marcos Activity Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Juneteenth charity barbecue cook-off starts the evening of Friday, June 21, and continues in the afternoon Saturday, June 22, at the Mitchell Center, 715 Valley Street. Featured are contests for best fajitas, beans, chicken, brisket and margaritas — just to name a few.
To compete, entrants must submit a form and a fee at the at the event.

The Juneteenth parade will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 22 with decorated vehicles lining up at 9 a.m. The parade will end at the Dunbar Recreation Center.
