HS Powerlifting: Moscorro finishes second at state championships

ABILENE — San Marcos High School junior Thomas Moscorro competed at the Texas High School Powerlifting State Championships last weekend, finishing second overall in the 123-pound weight class.

Competing against some of the states’ best lifters at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, Moscorro had a combined total of 1,145 pounds.

Moscorro lifted 410 in the squat, 285 in the bench press and 450 in the dead lift, the top deadlift in his class.

“It was awesome to see the expressions on our competitors when Thomas hit 450,” SMHS head powerlifting coach Cesar Calzadias said. “He had to come back to win the deadlift, and improved upon a third-place finish overall at the meet as a sophomore.”

Attending the meet with Moscorro SMHS Athletic Director Mark Soto, assistant powerlifting coach Adam Garza, Jonathan Bencomo and head powerlifting coach Cesar Calzadias.

Moscorro was one of two SMHS lifters to advance to state competition, as Karrissa Arroyo placed seventh in the THSWPA State Championships in Corpus Christi.
