Kent Black’s BBQ coming to San Marcos

Kent Black has a secret recipe, but he’s not sharing.
“I do (have a secret recipe), but none that I could tell you about,” he tells me at Kent Black’s BBQ’s new location on Grove. “We’ve got secrets. Trademark stuff.”
The place is still partially a dusty old warehouse that was used to store cotton, but is transforming into a first-rate BBQ joint. There’s rustic painted aluminum art on the walls, a new 17-foot pit inside, an indoor-outdoor patio beaming sunlight into one of the main seating areas and a new deck and handicap accessible walkway in the back.
“This building is about 70-years-old and it used to be a cotton warehouse. It’s got wood floors in it, a tin roof with real high ceilings and we’re trying to preserve that character of the building,” said Black. “We’re using a lot of recycled tin and wood to keep that old history alive.”
The back is spacious enough for live music and plenty of seating under 100-year-old pecan trees. And dogs will be welcome too.
The place has been under construction for several months and is planned to open sometime in the middle of next month, serving up Black’s signature BBQ.
 “I’ve been pit master there for a long time, so I’m going to bring similar cooking techniques here,” Black said. “One thing that’s different is that we’re going to have a full bar. If someone wants to have a draft beer or cocktail with their BBQ, it’ll be available.”
