An almost-record catch on the San Marcos River

Like most Texas rivers, the San Marcos River is not noted for an abundance of big bass. Small, narrow rivers like the San Marcos dont have the huge inhabitance of prime bass large lakes do. Thats why all the 13-pound plus bass in the ShareLunker Program have been caught in lakes, not rivers.

That doesnt mean, however, the San Marcos doesnt have some big bass. The record bass caught on the San Marcos was a 10.09-pound lunker, landed by Frank Cruz Jr. in 2005.

In November of 2012, Steve Moore caught a monster 28-inch, 9.98-pound largemouth on a Rooster Tail Spinner just a little below Cottonseed Rapid. Steve immediately took the fish to the A. E. Wood fish hatchery, got an official weight and released it back into the river. He currently holds the San Marcos River catch-and-release bass record.

Most recently on June 9, a college-student friend of mine named Erin Jaskey caught a huge bass just below my house near Martindale Falls. It should have been the river record.
