LEARNING TO DRAW WITH MERMAIDS
My youngest daughter Samantha, who is four years old, started drawing books this week. It started as an offshoot of Mother’s Day after she decided that everyday needed to be Mother’s Day. So on Monday at school she drew a book for her mom. Tuesday, she asked Mom what she wanted and learned that being better about getting ready for bed on her own would really make her mom happy. That led to the second book, which illustrates the five things we need to do to get ready for bed each night: get in your pajamas, fill up your water cup, brush your hair, brush your teeth and go potty. Now she has a checklist. She as decided that she wants to be an author and an illustrator when she grows up. (Or as she says it an is-tra-la-tor.)
This all leads me to this weekend. The Mermaid Society of Texas is hosting a live mermaid art event to celebrate MerMay. The AquaReinas will be live models for artists along the San Marcos River. Bring your own art supplies to the Lions Club Tube Rental on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. All ages are welcome and there will be some “how to draw a mermaid” sessions as well. They are asking for RSVPs to jamielynn@mermaidsocietysmtx.com. If we can stay out that late, I bet we’ll end up with another book on our hands.
MUSIC ON THE SQUARE
Seeking a fun, family-friendly activity for Friday night? Look no further than Music on The Square. Taking place every Friday this May, this concert series is a picnic-style event on the courthouse lawn. Our plan starts with ordering food to go from our favorite downtown restaurants. Currently, Blue Dahlia is open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. My husband can get his Taproom burger; I can get my brie tartine with apricot jam and walnuts. It’s a win-win. With dinner acquired, we will make our way to the Historic Hays County Courthouse, spread our blankets beneath the trees and listen to local music while basking in the cool, spring evening. Music begins at 6 p.m. and will feature performances by Poolboi Blu, Bartly and Van Jackson. Bring a chair, blanket and drinks but please remember, this event is glass free.

Ford Motor Company’s Model Ts were the first mass-produced automobiles in the United States, the vehicle that put Americans on wheels in the early 20th Century. Manufactured between 1908 and 1927, all remaining Model T vehicles are either over a 100 years old or nearing that century mark.
Dear Readers, Today, as we celebrate Mother's Day, my heart is with the countless mothers like myself who are facing unimaginable challenges within the family court system. I was divorced in 2011, maintaining primary custody of my sons who lived with me for more than 12 years, but for 655 days now, we have suffered through the perils of this system. It began when I sought to pursue higher education outside of my immediate county, a decision that should have been celebrated as a step towards a brighter future for my family. Instead, it became a battleground where my rights as a mother were questioned and ultimately disregarded.
There may be no better way to start Mother’s Day than serving Mom some breakfast in bed. A homemade meal before Mom even gets out of bed can set the right tone for a day that celebrates all mothers have done and continue to do for their children.
Let us depart from topics of nature and consider something that has given me a great deal of enjoyment — newspaper comic strips.

MENUDO ON QUATRO AND MANA’S ON CINCO
It’s Cinco de Mayo weekend and San Marcos is not low on festivities. The Menudo Throwdown will be taking over the lawn of the Historic Hays County Courthouse Saturday. The event starts at 9 a.m., tasting starts at 11 a.m and the winners are announced at 4:30 p.m. The winner takes home $1,200. This is a very fun event. You buy whatever amount of cups you want, then go tent to tent asking for menudo and borracho beans. Last year, there was also Micheladas. There is also a pageant for young girls, the Miss Chiquita pageant. The proceeds will benefit families dealing with cancer. Mana's Restaurant, 807 Alabama St, will be having a Cinco de Mayo party from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday with music, food and vendors. Get some Mexican food and shop your heart out. There’s sure to be plenty of festivities happening at the square as well, if you’d like to stop somewhere for a beer; I believe that is the official drink of Cinco de Mayo. I’m only kidding, sort of. Drink responsibly, my friends.
HISTORY OR MARIACHIS, WHY NOT BOTH?
In case you haven't heard, the Heritage Association of San Marcos is hosting the annual Home Tour this week. If you're reading this newspaper, I'm sure you're familiar with the plans. If not, check out www. heritagesanmarcos.org.
Additionally, outside of the many Cinco de Mayo festivities going on around town, there is also a performance by the Latin Music Studies of Texas State's College of Fine Arts. It is the 27th annual Feria Del Mariachi Concert at the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre at the Performing Arts Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
It is actually part of a Mariachi Festival that lasts all weekend including an ensemble competition of Texas Middle School and High School groups competition, workshops and the concert. All events are open to the public and held at the Patty Strickel Harrison Theatre.
For more information about the festival, visit latin.music.txst.edu/events.html. For tickets to the concert, visit txstatepresents. universitytickets.com.
MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU ALONG CYPRESS CREEK
May the Fourth Be With You this Saturday, and with us all at Blue Hole Regional Park as Wimberley Parks and Recreation presents “Star Wars” at 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. on the swim lawn. I’m a lifelong “Star Wars” fan. I have vivid memories of seeing “Episode Four: A New Hope” in the theater when I was two years old, and that was a formative moment. From then on, I have always wanted to be the clever and capable Princess Leia Organa. I’ve seen every movie (even the prequels), I’ve read all the novels, I’ve watched all the Star Wars-related series on Disney Plus, and we’re currently watching the new season of “The Bad Batch,” but one thing I haven’t done before is watch “Star Wars” under the stars. Also, I’ve never been to Blue Hole, so this experience promises to be more fun than a barrel of Ewoks. Blue Hole is located at 100 Blue Hole Ln. in Wimberley.
