The San Marcos Lady Rattlers opened the 2013 softball season in impressive fashion Tuesday night, scoring an 11-0, run-rule win over San Antonio-Brackenridge at the SMHS softball field.
San Marcos led 1-0 after the first inning before unleashing with nine runs in the second to pull away early.
“We played well tonight. We had four freshman in the starting lineup, so we’re pretty young,” SMHS head softball coach Cathy Stoughton said. “We are still facing some growing pains, but we’re improving.”
Stephanie Marmolejo led the Lady Rattlers with three RBIs, while Rene Contreras and Victoria Vasquez drove in two runs each. Contreras came through with a pair of triples.
“(Contreras) hit the ball hard three times and would have had another in her last at-bat, but she hit it so hard it struck our baserunner Ellie Hernandez on the arm,” Stoughton said.
On the mound, Vasquez allowed just two hits over four innings with two strikeouts, while Samantha Villegas struck out two hitters to help retire the side in the bottom of the fifth.
“Victoria surrendered only two hits tonight, but they weren’t solid shots,” Stoughton said. “And Samantha did a good job coming in and giving us a shutout inning.”
San Marcos is back in action Thursday as the Lady Rattlers begin play in the three-day Bryan ISD Invitational in Bryan.
