James Samuel McCorpin, 79, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2013 in Houston. He was born in Holdenville, Okla.on Jan. 27, 1934.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen Witty McCorpin, his son Michael McCorpin, his daughter Nancy McCorpin Stevens, and their spouses Deborah McCorpin and Randy Stevens, a sister and brother-in-law, Claudene and Jack Alt and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Vera McCorpin.
After graduating from Oklahoma A&M University, he served as an officer in the Air Force for three years and then took a position with Texaco, Inc., where he worked for 37 years, first in sales, then in Exploration and Geophysical.
Jim was a man of many interests. He was a prominent cavy judge and breeder, judging shows all over the US and in Canada. He was a member of The American Rabbit Breeders' Association and the American Cavy Breeders Hall of Fame. Other organizations included the Elks and the Houston Area Radar Controller group.
He served for many years as a Committeeman for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and judged several cavy shows there. He recently received his Lifetime Membership.
His many hobbies included making Indian jewelry and cooking for church gatherings. Through the years he volunteered hundreds of hours in missions at First Methodist Houston, West Houston Area Ministries, and the Elks Club. His two favorite things were participating with his daughter Nancy in the YMCA Indian Princess program and encouraging his son Mike in his high school wrestling many years ago.
A memorial service will be held at First Methodist Westchase on Aug. 27 at 10 o'clock in the morning.
