Louise Elbel died peacefully in her home on June 20, 2013, surrounded by family. Marie Louise Wernwag was born Nov. 14, 1922 in San Antonio to Florence Makin Wernwag and Charley Wernwag. She was raised in San Antonio, where she was the youngest of four siblings and attended Alamo Heights School’s Class of 1940.
She married John Alfred McGonagil, (died 10/31/58) on July 7, 1944. They had three daughters and lived in San Antonio. After becoming a widow in 1958, she worked as a dental and doctor assistant. On May 13, 1964 she married Jerome H. “Red” Elbel, (died 8/19/92) a life-long resident of New Braunfels, where they made their home. She was a member of The Gay Forties, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, a volunteer at the Sophienberg Museum Archives and Hope Hospice. Her strong faith and love for family and friends provided her with a long, happy life.
She is survived by her three daughters Kathy M. Morris and her husband Randall of San Marcos, Martha M. Koepp of New Braunfels and Barbara M. Mainz and her husband James of Bulverde. She was blessed with three grandsons, Christopher Morris, NYC; Carter John Morris and wife Holly, San Marcos; Brady Bading, New Braunfels; and great granddaughter Georgia Morris, San Marcos. She is survived by her loving cousin Jane M. Humble, San Antonio; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and long-time friends. The family expresses gratitude to the loving caregivers at New Braunfels Regional Rehabilitation Hospital, Comfort Connection and Hope Hospice.
Graveside services will be held for Lou Elbel at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218.
