Gardening expert to speak during Spring Lake Garden Club meeting

Spring Lake Garden Club’s monthly meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 8, 9:30 a.m. at the Hays County AgriLife Extension Office.  
Garden Club members and local gardening enthusiasts are encouraged to attend for a presentation on Keyhole Gardening.
W. Leon Smith will be the guest speaker.  He has been involved in keyhole gardening for eight years.  His company, Keyhole Farm, LLC, offers keyhole gardening kits for the public.

As part of the nonprofit Safe, Sassy and Strong fall prevention campaign, “A Course to Prevent Falls: On Your Feet and Having Fun,” is an 18-hour comprehensive course administered in nine sessions by Certified Aging in Place Specialist Camille Phillips. The sessions begin Monday, Oct. 12 at the San Marcos Public Library. The course sessions for people of all ages are Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The course is free, but people are asked to pre-register because space is limited. (

Accomplished poet Noel Crook is the author of two books of poetry, “Salt Moon” and “Canyon.”

Sisters share literary flair

On Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m., the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University will present a celebration of writing by sisters Elizabeth Crook and Noel Crook.
The sisters who are both acclaimed authors grew up in San Marcos.
During this unique event, each sister will read from the other’s work, rather than her own. The readings will be followed by a question and answer session.
