Willie Higgs of San Marcos, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at the age of 87. He was born Aug. 5, 1926 in San Marcos, to James Monroe and Esther Mae (Kennedy) Higgs.
Willie attended elementary and high school in San Marcos. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. and served at the Battle of Iwo Jima, was awarded the Purple Heart during his duty and was present at the historic raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. He attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College where he attained both his Bachelor and Masters Degrees. He later attended the University of Texas pursuing a PhD in Music History and Composition.
He taught music at San Marcos High School as choral director for 10 years and also at the San Marcos Academy for 16 years.
While attending college he met Jaque Reuthinger, the love of his life. They were married Aug 24. 1948. They had two sons, Bill Higgs and Bob Higgs.
During the summer vacations Willie performed at the 7A Ranch in Wimberley. He entertained at the “Nineties” production and at the Medicine Show performances. He had as much fun as the audience.
After a long career in the teaching profession, he became a success in his many business pursuits throughout the years!
He is survived by his wife Jaque; sons Bob Higgs and Bill Higgs and his wife Jenny; grandchildren Amy Higgs Byrne, Kailee Harbaugh and Kevin Higgs; and sister Dorys Dickey of Flint.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10: a.m., Monday, Aug. 26, at the First Baptist Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Mark Newton officiating. Interment to follow at the San Marcos City Cemetery.
