Readers speak: Where is the transparency in government?
By compromising our freedom(s) we lose them. We have compromised far too much already.
Without privacy there can be no freedom. This is absolute truth. The old government totalitarian attitude of “if you have nothing to hide, why shouldn’t we read your mail” and all that implies has never been acceptable and never will be.
Freedom was in the very definition of the United States of America, but not so much now. Today’s ubiquitous computer is the ultimate Orwellian device. We the PEOPLE must energize eternal vigilance to prevent the utilization of its malevolent and freedom stealing potential.
The whistleblowers Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden should be commended for their courage for exposing waste, theft, abuse of power, corruption of spying, lying, out of control bellicosity and other criminal activity. To not expose it would be treason.
The secrecy we necessarily allow our government to use was never intended to hide and protect malfeasance or other wrongdoing by criminally inclined governmental officials.
Where is the openness and transparency so loudly promised?
