Opinion: Tough love, defense staples of Kaspar’s success
No one is quite sure who first coined the one of the most overused clichés in the world sports, but it’s one that Texas State’s new men’s head basketball coach Danny Kaspar has subscribed to throughout his successful 22-year coaching career.
Defense wins championships.
It’s a simple, but effective formula which former the Stephen F. Austin coach and his superiors hope will resuscitate a men’s hoops program that last went to the NCAA Tournament in 1997 and hasn’t had a winning season since 2002-03.
It’s a philosophy that helped Kaspar compile a record of 246-141 in his 13 years at SFA, including last season’s National Invitation Tournament team that finished with the nation’s fourth-best record at 27-5 and led the nation in scoring defense, allowing 51.2 points per game.
