HS Track: Runnin' Rattlers shine at Texas State Invite
The San Marcos High School track and field teams competed at the Texas State High School Invitational held at Texas State’s Track and Field Complex last weekend.
The varsity boys came through with a second-place finish, while the girls’ team finished 5th overall in a meet that consisted mostly of relay races.
The girls distance medley relay team of Audrey Esparza, Kaci Mayberry, Elle Pichardo and Nikki Sanchez took first place, while the boys’ team of Domingo Cruz, Javier Love, Taylor Wright and Frankie Torres took second in the same event.
The boys’ 4x200-meter relay, consisting of Cory Brown, Brandon Chapman, Zach Sterling and Collin Anderson, teamed up to take second; while the boys sprint medley team of Anderson, Sterling, Chris Miller, and Brown also took second.
The boys’ 4x800 relay team of Taylor Wright, Domingo Cruz, Jorge Bolanos and Frankie Torres placed third, as did the girls’ Sprint Medley relay team of Kaylie Edwards, Madison Miles, Mayberry and Sanchez.
In the final relay of the afternoon, the 4x400 team of Brown, Love, Robert Wheeler and Sterling took second.
Individually, Wheeler took second in the 110-meter hurdles, while senior Robert Hernandez took third in the 300-meter hurdles.
In the field events, senior Alvin Dougherty took first in the boys’ pole vault, Brown finished third in the long jump and second in the triple jump, while junior Ben Hunt placed fourth in the high jump and senior Robert Arredondo took fourth in the shot put.
The SMHS Runnin’ Rattlers are back in action Saturday at the Converse-Judson Rocket Relays at Rutledge Stadium.
