HS Hoops: Lady Rebels win district title
BUDA — If Tuesday was going to be the final time guard Rachel Calabese, forward Jennifer Colonnetta, forward Kamryn Kent and guard Lindsey McCurdy played inside Oran Bales Gymnasium, they wanted to make it a night to remember. It’s safe to say Hays’ four seniors did just that.
Behind a balanced offensive effort and a stout defense, the Lady Rebels secured a share of the District 27-4A title. Hays doubled up Alamo Heights, 52-26, in the process.
With the win, the Lady Rebels improved their district record to 11-3. It locked Hays (25-8) in a three-way tie with Kerville-Tivy and Schertz-Clemens (both of which won Tuesday night).
“There’s just so much going on right now,” Kent said with a smile after the game. “We’re going out with a boom and it’s pretty awesome.”
Early on it looked as if the Lady Rebels would have their hands full with the Lady Mules. Hays couldn’t shake Alamo Heights, capping the first quarter tied at 8-all.
By the end of the second quarter, the Lady Rebels began to pull away. Kent and McCurdy each hit 3-pointers (two of five on the night for the duo) and Hays opened up a 21-15 lead.
Once the game progressed into the third quarter and the Lady Rebels locked down on defense, their name could begin to be engraved on the district trophy. Hays held Alamo Heights scoreless for 5:30 of the third quarter and limited the visitors to just three points in the frame.
“We played a pretty decent third quarter defensively, but we still gave up too many offensive rebounds,” Lady Rebel head coach Danny Preuss said. “Overall, I’m pleased with the attitude of the girls to come out here on a night where there are a lot of distractions and come together.”
As the final minutes melted off the clock and the seniors scored Hays’ final 12 points, the celebration could finally began. Even though it was a big win for the Lady Rebels, they know there is still work to be done.
“You never know what’s going to happen, so you need to stay prepared,” Kent said. “We’re just getting ready for anything that’s thrown our way.
“I’m really looking forward to what we can do. Being a senior and going into the playoffs, I have high hopes for us.”
Hays should draw a tough match-up in the bi-district round of the Class 4A playoffs as it looks like San Antonio-Brackenridge will be the second seed out of District 28-4A. The Lady Eagles are ranked 10th in the state, according to the TABC Poll.

San Marcos might have lost Tuesday night to Converse-Judson, but Christina Jamerson’s team can still reach the playoffs. The Lady Rattlers just need to win a playoff game to get there.
By virtue of San Marcos’ 47-15 loss to the Lady Rockets and Smithson Valley’s 35-30 setback at the hands of New Braunfels-Canyon, the Lady Rattlers will meet the Lady Rangers in district playoff either Thursday or Friday night to determine the district’s fourth seed.
