HS Hoops: Key game for the Lady Rattlers
With last Friday’s overtime win at New Braunfels-Canyon, the San Marcos Lady Rattlers have put themselves in a pretty good position for a playoff berth with three District 25-5A games remaining.
San Marcos (8-21, 2-5) now needs two wins to secure one of the district’s four postseason spots. However, the Lady Rattlers enter tonight’ game with a sense of urgency, considering SMHS closes out the district schedule with last-place new Braunfels (0-7) and first-place Converse-Judson (7-0). A win over Smithson Valley (13-8, 3-4) would force at least a three-way tie with the Lady Rangers and New Braunfels-Canyon (15-9, 3-4). Canyon visits New Braunfels tonight.
Smithson Valley beat San Marcos, 50-42 in the initial meeting Jan. 11.
The Lady Rattlers’ defense did a good job blanketing Canyon’s shooters in overtime, forcing a failed desperation shot at the end to give SMHS the 52-51 win.
The Lady Rattlers took the lead for good when sophomore guard Shannon Mathis ran in for a lay-up with 50 seconds remaining.
SMHS sophomore guard Bailey Hill led all scorers with 17 points, while coming through with five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Sophomore guard Shannon Mathis threw in a season-high 13 points to go with four rebounds and two assists, while sophomore point guard Madison Miles scored eight points. Senior post Natalie Langford led the team with seven rebounds.
