HS Basketball: SMHS girls face Smithson Valley in 25-5A playoff

The scenario couldn’t be any simpler.

The winner advances to the Class 5A playoffs, while the loser’s season will come to an abrupt end.

That the situation San Marcos and Smithson Valley face in Saturday’s District 25-5A girls playoff game for the league’s fourth and final playoff berth. Tip-off is scheduled for noon at New Braunfels High School.

San Marcos (8-25, 3-7) could have claimed the berth outright had the Rattlers won one of their last two games. But a 49-46 overtime loss to last-place Judson, followed Tuesday’s loss to first-place Converse-Judson forced SMHS to fall into a tie for fourth place with Smithson Valley (13-21, 3-7).

The two teams split their earlier meetings, with the Lady Rangers winning the initial meeting 50-42 on Jan. 11, and San Marcos winning the rematch, 50-48 on Jan. 29.

Smithson Valley is currently riding a four-game losing streak with its last win coming Jan. 22 against last-place New Braunfels. The Lady Rangers are coming off 35-31 loss to New Braunfels-Canyon.
