HS Baseball: Rattlers slide past Judson
Considering the history between San Marcos and Converse-Judson on the baseball diamond, Tuesday night’s District 25-5A showdown was destined to be another knock-down, drag-out game.
Especially when Judson erased a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth.
But thanks to Derrick Vasquez’ solid effort in relief, and a couple of infield RBI singles, the Rattlers were able to grind out a 5-3 win over the Rockets, putting SMHS in a tie with Judson for second place in the 25-5A standings. The two teams finished tied for second the past two seasons.
“We’ve played them eight times in three years and we’re probably looking at nine if they take of their business and we take care of ours,” SMHS head baseball coach Bryan Webb said.
San Marcos (20-9-1, 5-3 25-5A) clinched a playoff berth with Tuesday’s win and is at Wagner (1-6) Friday before closing out district play at home against New Braunfels-Canyon (3-5) next Tuesday. Judson hosts New Braunfels-Canyon Friday before closing out with New Braunfels (2-5). First-place Smithson Valley has a two-game lead after beating Canyon, 7-4, Tuesday night — a win which helped propel the Snakes into the postseason.
