College Baseball: Texas State returns to WAC play
The Texas State baseball team will look to add to its recent success in Western Athletic Conference play as the Bobcats begin a three-game series at Sacramento State tonight.
Texas State (12-16, 5-1 WAC) is currently tied with Texas-Arlington for first place in the conference after last week’s three-game sweep at Seattle. The Bobcats followed by giving No. 18 Rice a scare Tuesday night, falling 3-2 after 12 innings.
Sacramento State (15-14, 2-4) is coming off a 8-4 loss against San Francisco Tuesday night after dropping two of three game at Dallas Baptist last weekend. The Hornets dropped two of three against Cal State-Bakersfield to open WAC play.
Texas State comes into the series with a team batting average of .157 led by sophomore Cody Lovejoy, who’s hitting .350 for the season.
Sophomore Garrett Mattlage (.297) lead the team with 20 RBIs.
Sacramento State, by comparison is hitting .272 as a team, led by freshman Chris Lewis, who is batting .318 with 23 RBIs.
Taylor Black (2-3, 3.59 ERA) will get the start on the mound for the Bobcats. Black last pitched in the Bobcats’ 4-2 series-opening win against Seattle, allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts.
He’ll be countered by Sacramento State sophomore right-hander Brennan Leltao (2-2, 3.54 ERA) who gave up four runs on five hits in his last outing — a 6-3 loss to Dallas Baptist. He leads the team with 29 strikeouts.
