College Baseball: Bobcats top HBU, 7-3
Tuesday’s game, that resulted in a 7-3 victory by Texas State over Houston Baptist, allowed head coach Ty Harrington a little bit of freedom in his managerial decisions.
For the first time all season, the Bobcats didn’t have to ‘play up’ to a mid-week opponent. Previous non-conference tilts put Texas State up against Texas (March 26 and April 9), Rice (April 1), Baylor (April 16) and Texas A&M (April 23); and while the Huskies deserved some respect, they didn’t have the same clout — and Harrington’s bunch is now 15-0 all-time against them.
So, gone were the usual starters for the Bobcats. Senior outfielder Morgan Mickan, junior catcher Tyler Pearson and freshman second baseman J.D. Stinnett all took well-deserved breaks on the bench.
Freshman outfielder Cody Geisler, who went 2 for 4 with two runs batted in, took over Mickan’s spot in center field. Junior catcher Cody Perkins gave Pearson a rest. Regular third baseman Nick Smelser moved to second — which allowed Stinnett to catch his breath — and freshman Matt Smith got some reps at the hot corner.
“We needed to get those guys in (the game) the get better and to create some opportunities for them,” Harrington said. “All of them responded well.”
