High School Softball: Lady Rattlers sweep East Central, win area championship
San Marcos wanted an opportunity to win the area championship on its own field.
Well, the Lady Rattlers got their chance Friday night and didn't squander it.
San Marcos beat San Antonio East Central 4-3 and in turn, swept the best-of-three series and won its first area championship since 1999.
Down 2-1 entering the bottom of the third, the Lady Rattlers tied the game when Mariah Delgado scored on a wild pitch. Delgado hit a two-out double and advanced to third on a single by Stephanie Marmolejo, who clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.
San Marcos put some distance between itself and the Lady Hornets in the fourth inning when it took advantage of several errors by the visitors. Olivia Lantigua, pinch-running for Cici Kinere, scored on an error by East Central's third baseman and three batters later, Haley Wright scored after Delgado was hit by a pitch.
The Lady Rattlers had to work to close it out, but once Victoria Vasquez induced consecutive fly outs to center field, they could breathe easier. Vasquez pitched well all night as she struck out five batters.
San Marcos must wait to find out its next opponent as Corpus Christi Carroll and San Antonio Johnson must play a decisive third game Saturday afternoon.
