Little went right for Texas State in Thursday’s opening round of the Texas Shootout as Ricci Woodard’s team was swept by North Texas (1-0) and No. 25 Baylor (10-2).
Outside of a solid 4 2/3 innings from junior pitcher Rayn House, which spread over the course of the Bobcats’ two games, there wasn’t much to cheer about for those 566 fans in attendance.
Against the Mean Green, Texas State stranded 11 runners and hit 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Senior second baseman Anna Hernandez and junior shortstop Jordan Masek combined to leave nine runners on base.
Opportunities were handed to the Bobcats (2-9) on a platter, yet they couldn’t come through. Texas State loaded the bases with one out in the second, had second and third with no outs in the third, first and second with one out in the fourth and put a runner at third with one out in the seventh (after a 14-minute blackout) and had nothing to show for it.
“We didn’t do a good job at the plate that game,” Woodard said. “These girls are going to have to keep battling and learn to make adjustments as the game goes on.”
In the nightcap against the Bears, the Bobcats couldn’t keep runs off the scoreboard.
