Young gardeners hope to lure butterflies
Kiwanis Club members, along with Master Gardeners, parent volunteers and teachers participated recently in a “K Kids” service project at DeZavala Elementary School.
The third, fourth, and fifth grade students combed the campus for trash, as well as planted perennials in the school courtyards.
Butterfly-attracting native plants including lantanas, pentas and salvias were generously donated by Ellie’s Nursery.
Rob Martin, Del Brown, John Polk, Veronique Hahn, Beverly Crumley and Kelli Whigham represented the Kiwanis Club for the project.
Master Gardeners Judy Telford, Harriet Hansen and Ida Miller will be working with students two days a week through the school year preparing vegetable garden beds, starting seeds and maintaining the butterfly garden at the campus.
