University Police to teach self-defense class

The Pecos building at Texas State University will soon be filled with the sound of punches and kicks as the University Police Department teaches their next Krav Maga class. The class is scheduled to take place March 21 from 5 to 9 p.m.
To give students a better idea of what they’ll learn during the class, the University Police Department will hold a demonstration in the Quad March 19 from noon to 2 p.m.
While on the Quad, two trained Krav Maga instructors will demonstrate basic moves – kicks, punches, etc. – to aid students in self-defense. Students will be given an opportunity to sign up for the upcoming class during the demonstration and practice basic moves with the instructors.
The first 25 students will be guaranteed a spot in the class and any others will be put onto a waiting list. All Krav Maga classes taught on campus will be free.
“Krav Maga in American is a major business and we are one of the only places teaching this training for free,” instructor Otto Glenewinkel said.
The class that will be held March 21 will take place at the Krav Maga training facility located at the Pecos Building, 201 Pleasant St.
Students will receive a one hour lecture portion to enhance awareness of their surroundings and their ability to avoid escalations and dangerous states of social interaction. There are also features focusing on the physical knowledge that comes with the Krav Maga technique, such as chokes, wrist grabs, head locks and other forms of defensive action.
After this is completed, they will be taken into a gym where each student will receive gloves and a punching mat. The instructors will then spend time teaching the students the basic Krav Maga moves and tactics.
