HS Powerlifting: Coach Cal steps down at SMHS

San Marcos powerlifting head coach Cesar Calzadias (at right, shown here posing with Thomas Mascorro at the Texas State High School Powerlifting Championships, recently decided to vacate his position and concentrate on his family and other academic pursuits, which include him getting his master’s degree (Courtesy Photo).

His decision to leave San Marcos High School was difficult for former powerlifting coach, Cesar Calzadias.

But when the deciding factor is family, it was a no-brainer.

“I need to get closer to my family, “ said Calzadias. “My parents (Enrique and Yolanda B.) are getting a little bit older, so it was a family decision for me. I need to go and spend time with them.”

Calzadias, a Laredo native, will continue his education at Texas A&M International University to pursue a masters degree in school administration. His ultimate goal is to become a principal or perhaps a superintendent in the near future.
