HS Baseball: Lucky break for the Rattlers
For a short moment, San Marcos’ District 25-5A game against New Braunfels Friday night seemed destined for extra innings.
With the game tied at 4-all and runners at the corners with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, San Marcos senior D.A. Tobias dropped a slow-rolling grounder down the first-base line, as New Braunfels first-baseman Hunter
Coronado patiently waited for what seemed to be an easy third out once he picked the ball up and touched the bag.
But baseball can be a fickle game, which Coronado found out the hard way. In Bill Buckner-esque fashion, Coronado let the ball get past him, allowing SMHS junior Tucker Smith to score from third and give SMHS a 5-4 win at Rattler Field.
“Good things happen to some teams and we haven’t had a break like that all year long,” SMHS head coach Bryan Webb said. “It’s happened to us where we have lost some tough games like that, but it’s about time we got a break.”
