1927 - 2013
Hazel Elizabeth Carter, 86, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27 at The chapel in San Marcos City Cemetery.
Remembrances to the American Cancer Society are welcome.
Hazel was born in Donna on Feb. 15, 1927, to Thomas Leslie and Hazel Iris Hesketh. She grew up in the Valley in Donna where she graduated from Donna High in 1944. Her parents both passed away by the time she was 19. She talked often about the wonderful childhood she had growing up in the Valley, her father's bakery, her mother's way with flowers at the church and how the community loved them.
Hazel worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator for two years before marrying Royce in 1947 and becoming an Air Force officer's wife. She loved and looked forward to all the moves in the service – San Antonio, Anchorage, Alaska, Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C.
Hazel and Royce retired from the Air Force and lived in San Marcos, St. Louis, Mo., Grand Prairie and Tehran, Iran, then back to Grand Prairie and finally in 1984 to Fort Worth, where she had lived ever since.
Hazel was a 53-year member of The Weslaco Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, which held a special place in her heart.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Royce Payne Carter; and sister Mary Flavia Parker.
Survivors include sons Royce Payne Carter Jr. and Clifford Burdette Carter and wife Phyllis; daughter Debra Lou Carter; granddaughters Valerie Tenbarge and husband Neil and Kelly Carter; great-grandchildren Kalin, Rafe and Lane Tenbarge; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
